For pain in your teeth, an endodontist is the right person to see for relief. This dentist focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infections that affect the nerve and roots of the tooth. Ignoring tooth pain or putting off an appointment can lead to further problems. To confirm that you have an abscessed tooth or profound decay, this dentist will run through a few steps. Then, the right treatment can take place.
Causes of tooth pain and the effects
Many people have dealt with toothaches from time to time. This is not an uncommon sensation, especially when eating or drinking cold or hot beverages. When the pain is persistent and intense, the individual probably has a cavity or infection. Decay can spread and deteriorate the tooth. The infection can also travel throughout the mouth and into the body.
Poor oral hygiene is typically what causes toothaches. People of all ages should brush with fluoride-based toothpaste at least twice a day. Daily flossing will also remove bacteria from the teeth. Eating a diet high in sugar can also lead to tooth pain.
Questions for the patient
The first thing the endodontic staff will do is talk to the patient. The endodontist will ask questions about how the patient feels. The dentist will also want to know how long the person has been in pain, what other areas of the mouth and face hurt, and whether the pain subsides at all. If the tooth is damaged, the dentist will ask how it occurred. It may also be helpful to know whether any other teeth are in pain.
Taking X-rays
When a person has tooth pain that keeps them up at night or interferes with their quality of life, a visit to the endodontist is necessary. At this appointment, the hygienist will take X-rays of the area where the tooth pain is occurring. These images will allow the team to see within the tooth. The X-rays will reveal whether there is decay or infection and what the extent may be. These pictures will also show the nerves and root.
Performing an exam
The endodontist will also do a hands-on examination to diagnose the patient’s condition. The dentist may use a dental probe to check for deep cavities. The dentist will also look for signs of trauma and structural damage. This exam may also involve testing to see how the patient responds to stimuli by blowing air into the affected tooth.
